Laurel Mercantile and the Scotsman General Store: Shopping Home Town in Laurel, MS

If you watch Home Town, you already know why I went to Laurel Mercantile and the Scotsman General Store. I loved Laurel. It’s a beautiful, sleepy little town, and it’s a lot of fun walking around seeing things you recognize from HGTV.

I came home with a t-shirt, a cutting board I thought was a charcuterie board, and a list of regrets. Mostly one regret. It’s a wooden egg tray, and we’ll get to that.

Here’s what I bought at both stores, what I wish I’d bought, and the photo you can’t leave Laurel without.

Laurel Mercantile: The Egg Tray That Got Away

Laurel Mercantile Co. is the big one, at 414 Front Street. It’s full of home goods, kitchen things, candles, clothes and art. I bought a t-shirt. A perfectly nice t-shirt.

What I should have bought was the beautiful wood egg tray. I walked away from it, and now I think about it. So learn from me. If you love it, get it. You are not going to find it at home, and you’ll be sitting in your kitchen wishing you had.

And yes, Erin and Ben are inside. Cardboard Erin and Ben, anyway. Of course we took the picture.

You can see what they carry and get the store hours on the Laurel Mercantile visit page.

The Scotsman General Store: My Accidental Cutting Board

The Scotsman General Store and Woodshop is a separate stop, at 1 Spec Wilson Boulevard. It’s a much smaller store than the Mercantile, but it is 100% worth a trip.

I bought my husband what I thought was a baseball diamond shaped charcuterie board. I got it home and it actually says it’s a cutting board. Same concept. LOL. It’s gorgeous and thick, and I will not be cutting on it. I also got him one of their signature scent wax melts.

The store says you can watch the Scotsman woodworking team through a big glass wall, and you might catch Ben and the team filming. The woodshop itself isn’t open to the public, so don’t plan your whole day around it. You can find more on the Scotsman website.

Go Upstairs for the Laurel Sign Picture

While you’re at the Scotsman, go upstairs and get your picture with the Laurel, Miss. sign. It’s the one you see in every Home Town episode. You will feel a little silly. Do it anyway.

Before You Go

When I checked on November 4, the regular hours posted for the shops were 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Holiday hours are different, so look at the visit page before you drive over.

The two stores are different addresses, so save both in your phone. And leave room in the car. Ask me how I know about that egg tray.

Next Time in Laurel

I want to come back with my husband and stay a few days. We’d drive around, walk downtown, shop the cute antique shops and relax. And I would like a word with that egg tray.
